Which Melbourne eatery just landed Best Café at an international design awards show?
Melbourne’s reputation for being rather design-savvy is no longer just a national opinion, but an international one. The city has claimed not one, but two of the world’s sleekest eateries, with two major wins at the recent World Interior News Awards in London.
Melbourne’s own interior design studio GOLDEN was recognised for ‘Best Café’ for Moby 3143 , as well as ‘Best Leisure Venue’ for Sum Of Us. The awards acknowledges the world’s most influential designs and practices across the arenas of hospitality, retail, workplace and residential interiors.
Moby was born within the 1970s shell of a former espresso bar. “We strived to design a café experience that would invite locals to reconnect with the iconic building,” explains GOLDEN co-director Kylie Dorotic of the company’s direction. “The design celebrates the striking façade, and creates a dining destination that still feels approachable.”

The result is a space adorned in a palette of of dusty ochre and bold colour-blocked teal. Emerald green tiles frame the kitchen, while a white stair balustrade leads diners up through the multi-levelled space and out onto the cafe’s rooftop garden.
It’s not the first time that GOLDEN has been recognised for its design capabilities, having already won for the design of The Penny Drop in Box Hill, at the global Restaurant and Bar Design Awards last year.
