Byron Bay’s neighbouring town is proving strong competition these days.

Brunswick Heads may once have been the quirky, quiet cousin of Byron Bay, but times they are a changin’. Now the Northern New South Wales town is fast becoming a foodie hub, thanks to the arrival in recent years of Fleet, its soon-to-arrive Mexican eatery, and latest resident Bounty.

Bounty is the first Australian venture of Sydney-born, London-based restaurateur Bonny Porter. The former Masterchef contestant set sail for the UK after the show concluded, opening restaurant Balls & Company in Soho. Earlier this year, Porter sold the eatery to return home to Australia, and has now shifted her attention towards the blossoming Brunswick Heads.

Nestled along the Simpson River, Bounty will dole out breakfast and lunch seven days a week, as well as dinner from Thursday to Sunday. Manning the kitchen will be much revered chef David Lovett (ex-Uccello and 100-mile table) who will focus on serving wholesome fare to the 80-seat restaurant. Joining Lovett on the team will be Tim Bryer (ex-Paper Daisy) in the role of general manager.

“We have a really strong team behind Bounty, and are very excited to be bringing a brand new dining concept to the Brunswick Heads area,” says Porter of her new project. “Bounty will be a destination that brings people together around a common love of simple food done well in the small seaside village that Bruns is.”

Takeaway will form an important part of the Bounty menu, will offerings of both the sweet and savoury inclination. Expect to see Porter’s famed Swedish cardamom buns, seasonal salads, and heaped baguettes and sandwiches among other treats.

Those choosing to dine in will be able to enjoy a family-style feast crafted from local produce, with the menu separated into land, sea, garden, and pantry. Tuck into Ballina prawns and Saskia Beer spatchcock, followed by brownie gelato served in a waffle cone and topped with Persian fairy floss.

The wine list is patriotic and largely boutique, with smaller talents prevalent throughout; Margaret River’s Dormilona and Beechworch’s Pennyweight included. Those who prefer a cocktail with their mains will be able to enjoy a tipple from a bespoke cocktail list created in collaboration with local talents Brookies Gin and Lord Byron Vodka.

Bounty opens on Friday December 7.
