Goodbye Iceworks, hello Darling
Paddington’s long-standing Iceworks bar and restaurant is no more, replaced by Darling and Co, a new seven-day, breakfast-lunch-dinner venture from the team behind the Fox Hotel, in South Brisbane.
The facelift comes courtesy of Angus Munro of Marc and Co, who aimed to transform the popular watering hole into a community hub with wifi, bike racks and a dog-friendly outdoor area.
Ex-Bucci chef Guiliano Melluso is manning the pans as head chef for the 300 seater dining room. Starters include jalapeno-spiked yellow fin tuna tacos and betel leaves loaded with Noosa spanner crab, watermelon and hibiscus, with plus house-smoked ocean trout with horseradish, sorrel and poached egg.
For the hungry, the mains have a strong Italian-bent, with oyster mushroom and truffle mascarpone gnocchi, braised Wagyu brisket tagliatelle and a handful of pizzas.
Come morning, punters can absolve last night’s transgressions with a kale, avocado and wild rice loaded green breakfast bowl, topped with halloumi and soft boiled eggs, or more of that house-smoked trout, this time with potato hash.
The old Dowse bar is also no more, but there’s still plenty of drinks on pour, with a decent Aussie gin line-up (Four Pillars, Young Henrys, West Winds and Archie Rose), plus organic tea from the West End Tea Co and house-made cold pressed juices.
