West End pub The Boundary Hotel is one of Brisbane’s original watering holes, built for the beer lovers of the River City back in 1864. While the pub has no doubt remained a favourite for locals over the years, it’s certainly seen better days. That was until a recent $3.5 million makeover that transformed the historic space into a new multi-purpose destination for Brisbanites.
But regulars need not panic, everything that was precious to locals about the pub has been carefully retained says manager Grant Morgan. “We have given The Boundary a new lease on life, but it’s still got that authentic pub charm,” he says, “We were very conscious of staying true to The Boundary’s roots and ensuring this is still the much-loved local pub for many in West End, with an impressive makeover.”

While The Boundary may still offer plenty of charm, it will also now be able to tempt visitors with an array of new eating options. “There is nothing quite like it in Brisbane and we closely followed the popularity of Sydney venues like The Grounds Of Alexandria and Coogee Pavilion. We have West End’s only rooftop bar, a laneway, pizzeria, gaming room, bars, live music, event spaces and a courtyard offering grazing plates. It’s the ultimate gastro pub,” Morgan says of the revamp’s inspiration.
The refurbishment has taken 18 months and comes courtesy of Brisbane’s KP architects. Of course, carefully preserving a 154-year history while modernising it has been no easy task, but The Boundary’s makeover has so far received the tick of approval from the Pitt family, who ran the pub for 90 years. “Sisters from the Pitt family visited the space and were blown away by all the original pieces and many items we have restored,” Morgan continues.

“We have brought the original steel beams back to life, which were made by Brisbane’s Harvey, Seargent, and Co. in 1928, as well as other items including the famous hand painted Fourex sign from The Boundary’s drive-through. The Boundary’s heritage will continue to shine through.”
Alongside a completely new menu and drinks list, the new Boundary consists of six new function spaces including a rooftop bar, a beer garden (it’s Queensland after all), and four private function rooms.
