Get out from under your rock and check out this crayfish festival on a remote island

If you needed an excuse to explore Tassie, this is it.

The Flinders Island Food and Crayfish Festival is set to return this April, with the annual crustacean celebration taking place on one of the country’s most scenic islands, just off the coast of South-East Tasmania.

Held April 15-19, visitors are invited to explore the island, which is the largest of 52 islets in the area.  Home to a pristine coastline and crystal clear waters, the conditions are just right for breeding crayfish and there will be plenty of opportunities to try one over the five-day foodie affair.

Beyond crayfish scoffing, visitors to Flinders Island will find no shortage of things to do. Beyond the endless beach time, secluded picnics, nature hikes, and bike trails will be a extensive program of cultural and culinary events.

This year, acclaimed chefs and TV presenters Karen Martini and Tobie Puttock will take part in the festival, where they will offer demonstrations on how to cook with crays, as well as some of the island’s more unique local ingredients.

Also making a special appearance will be former North Bondi Fish chef Jesse McTavish who will team up with Indigenous chef Toni Wood to put on a long table lunch.

For those who wish to go island hopping, there will also be a tour of nearby Vansittart Island. The festival line-up will also include a booze cruise with stops at local wineries and distilleries, and a number of farm tours.

And that’s just a taste of what’s on offer. The Flinders Island Food and Crayfish Festival returns this April 15-19, 2020. Stay tuned for the full program, which will be released later this month. For more information on the festival head to foodandcrayfishfestival.com and @visitflindersisland.
