Four 'N Twenty to release a plant-based "meat" pie and people are flipping their lid

Four 'N Twenty.

Smokos will never be the same.

Iconic Aussie pie brand, Four ‘N Twenty, is set to release a plant-based version of its beef pie so everyone can chomp into a scalding hot and suspiciously-filled pastry at the footy.

The new meat-free pie will be made from soy protein and is said to have the same colours, flavours and textures as the beefy original.

While the pie will contain no animal products, it will, however, be made on the Four ‘N Twenty production line, so it won’t be classified as vegan.

While most people were in support of the pie, others took to social media to vent their outrage.

“Why would you ruin an icon,” one user volunteered.

“Why don’t non-meat eaters just go and buy a spinach and ricotta pasty!”  someone commented, while another queried: “When did Four ‘N Twenty start adding meat to pies?”

Federal Queensland MP Bob Katter went so far as to upload a video calling on people to “say no to vegan pies” and instead “eat our Aussie beef”.

The plant-based pie will go on sale at supermarkets, servos and football stadiums from March, at a slightly higher cost to the original.
