Just wait until you see what it's called. Words by Lindy Alexander.
Winter may nearly be over, but Game of Thrones fans have been warmed by the news that Ben Hawkey, the actor who plays Hot Pie in the hit TV show, has opened a bakery in London. Aptly named You Know Nothing John Dough, the bakery stocks loaves of direwolf bread, just like the ones Hot Pie made for Arya Stark and Brienne of Tarth.
Timed with the launch of Season 7 on HBO, the bakery uses food delivery service Deliveroo to transport the whole-wheat and orange zest cornbread to people in the London area. It’s recommended that they are served warm with butter (the loaves, not the people).
The character of Hot Pie first appeared in Season one and since then has become popular amongst fans for his passion for baked goods and humility. It seemed a no-brainer then that Hawkey could launch a niche bakery. “Hot Pie’s Direwolf loaves are a favourite for Game of Thrones fans, and people are always asking me for the secret of my recipe,” Hawkey told NME. “I can’t share that, but Deliveroo customers will have the chance to try them themselves. You don’t even need to take a dangerous walk down the King’s Road to visit, it comes to you.”
The popularity of the bread makes us think it’s a real pity that he’s only selling direwolf bread, and not, you know, hot pies.
