The dessert giant strikes out into the world of savoury.
Messina is rarely a word associated with the savoury side of food, considering the brand’s gelato empire. But this Saturday, Messina will be dipping its toe into the world of savoury flavours with the debut of Messina Eats: Pie Country.
As its name suggests, the one-day event will celebrate the Australian delicacy of the meat pie. Held at the brand’s Rosebery space in Sydney Saturday March 18, Pie Country will host a selection of house-made pies. These will be accompanied by mash, mushy peas, gravy, mac and cheese and, of course, an apple pie-based dessert courtesy of Messina.
The pies served will deviate from the traditional meat and tomato sauce combination favoured at the footy. The four gourmet options will incorporate ingredients that include slow-cooked lamb, and mushrooms glazed in porcini bechamel. The tasty concoctions include: It’s Nacho Pie (Beef chill con carne with corn chips, guacamole, sour cream and jalapenos), Baby Don’t Herd Me (braised lamb shoulder pie with mushy peas, mashed potato and gravy), Spiecy Gurkha (slow cooked Nepalese chicken curry pie with mushy peas and mashed potato), and Mushroom 3.14 (A medley of mushrooms braised in porcini béchamel with mushy peas and mashed potato).
