Messina’s Christmas trifle is making a comeback and this year it's tropical flavoured

Behold, the Christmas Coma.
Behold, the Christmas Coma.

Sorry fruitcake, but the tribe has spoken.

Christmas desserts are notoriously hit and miss (fruitcake, rum balls and plum pudding, we’re looking at you) but it doesn’t have to be this way.

This year, give nan the afternoon off and put in an order for Messina’s winning gelato trifle – the Christmas Coma – which will be making a comeback for 2019.

While last year, the ice-cream dream team put together a festive red fruits creation, this year they’ve decided to go with a more summery theme.

The tropical-inspired dessert will be made from seven layers of lusciousness, starting with passionfruit mousse, stacked with guava flummery (a jelly pudding), macadamia crunch, whipped coconut cream, mango-soaked sponge cake, mango sorbet and a chocolate coconut on top, promising a divine sugar high followed by several hours of unconsciousness.

The 7-layer trifle feeds 20-30 people.

Served in a glass bowl, the trifle comes with a one-litre bottle of Messina rum custard and a cooler bag, so you can safely transport it to your family picnic. You’ll also get a box of Messina Christmas crackers, some of which have been loaded with free Messina vouchers, which sure beats a tiny tape measure.

Last year’s Christmas Coma sold out weeks in advance so this year, they’ve decided to launch early (Tuesday, October 29 to be exact) with a dedicated pre-sale for the trifle die-hards. Each trifle feeds 20-30 people and is priced at $170.  To order, click here.
