The new space that's a tea house by day, gin bar by night

A new take on the G&T lands at The Star.

Multi-tasking may not be a modern phenomenon, but it seems to be an increasingly popular one, particularly for venues. The Star Sydney has just unveiled its latest space, which will perform not one but two roles – acting as a tea house by day and a gin bar by night. The cleverly named G&Tea is the latest devotee to Australia’s growing demand for gin and tonics and promises to offer ample entertainment value alongside its drinks selection.

The quirky new bar is located on the ground floor of the Astral Hotel and opened quietly during the Christmas holidays. The prominent style squad from Luchetti Krelle are behind the 74-seat venue’s lavish interiors, crafting a space around the concept of bringing the outside in. Impressive LED wall screens have created an immersive experience which will see guests welcomed to a rainforest by day and fireflies and moonlight by night.

During the day, guests will be able to indulge in a range of different artisanal teas. There’s something promised for every price point, with teas stretching from a classic blends section, through to Chinese teas, and herbal varieties. For those with an urge to splurge there are the 24-karat Yellow Gold Tea Buds by TWG. At $120 a pot, the tea is considered one of the best offerings from within the white tea realm. Of course, it’s not just tasty, but puts on a show when it comes to sipping; its platinum buds transform with the touch of hot water.

Tea is served as a part of an exclusive gongfu tea ceremony, conducted by a qualified and dedicated tea master. This process mirrors traditional Chinese methods and is said to intensify the flavours of your given drink of choice further.

Once evening arrives, G&Tea’s attention turns to spirits. There’s gin in all its forms available here, from classic gin and tonics to new fusions like gin spritz, made from Ink Gin, prosecco, soda and orange slice. Cocktails are all unsurprisingly gin-based; named ‘Tea-Tails’ these include a green tea mojito and tea-tini (tea martini) among others.

“The launch of G&Tea is another stunning example of our commitment to creating thrilling experiences for our guests and to transforming The Star into Sydney’s premier dining and entertainment destination,” says Dino Mezzatesta of The Star.

“The team has married the beautifully crafted space with a menu that is a playful yet sophisticated fusion of the finest flavours, guaranteed to see guests become lost in the wonderful world of tea and gin.”

G&Tea will be open seven days a week, from 6.30am to 11.00pm Sunday to Thursday and from 6.30am to midnight Friday to Saturday.
