The Apollo and Cho Cho San owner brings GRECA to the River City.
Having already captured the hearts of Sydney and Tokyo locals alike with his saganaki, restaurateur Jonathan Barthelmess is readying himself for the attention of Brisbane ahead of the launch of his first Queensland venture. The Sydney-based chef behind Greek fine diner The Apollo (found now both Sydney and Tokyo), as well as Cho Cho San will be introducing GRECA to the Sunshine State later this year.
Barthelmess’ contemporary interpretation of a Greek taverna will be one of the handful of eateries that form a part of the Howard Smith Wharves development, which is currently underway. The heritage-listed precinct shows no shortage of food opportunities, with a Brisbane-based Toko and Felon Brewing Co among its offerings. GRECA will follow Barthelmess’ mantra for ‘uncomplicated food, great wine and generosity in abundance’.
“When a space became available on Howard Smith Wharves, the opportunity was too good to say no,” explains Barthelmess of his northern plans. “The positioning of the site and the incredible energy surrounding the development created the perfect chance for me to come back to my home state and introduce something evolved and different — a new village by the water.” The menu will focus on traditional Greek flavours cooked over wood and fire and in stone-based ovens, served as plates designed to share.
The interiors will be taken care of by longtime collaborator George Livissianis, who is set to reimagine the heritage warehouse into a modern trattoria. The dining room will spill outside, accented by polished concrete floors, simple furnishings and a crisp, white Mediterranean palette. Sitting at the restaurant’s heart will be an open kitchen, complete with fire pit.
GRECA’s menu will incorporate a number of popular dishes from The Apollo, alongside new takes on Greek feasting. Fare will be partnered with a largely Mediterranean wine list, and cocktails designed with the warm Queensland climate in mind. GRECA will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.
