State of Grace returns to the scene after a two-year hiatus.
Back in November 2016, Melbourne bar State of Grace disappeared without a trace. But the Victorian drinking den is back, resurrected again on November 1st. Of course its not the same bar, in the same space, but a new and improved lounge that has moved from its Collins Street abode to new digs on King Street.
Fans of the original bar will be happy to hear the new incarnation has embraced the same interest in old-world design. Inside you’ll find a European-style restaurant accompanied by hidden cellar bar (dubbed Fall from Grace), both decked out in marble, mirror and chandeliers aplenty. As for where exactly this hidden drinking den sits, you’ll find the entry concealed behind a bookcase within the restaurant. It’s well worth the effort to find; firebreathers and Burlesque dancers are just some of the promised entertainment within, alongside an extensive spirits list.
Of course the restaurant is also worthy of a visit. Chef Alison Hartmire has crafted a menu of Modern Australian favourites, influenced by European flavours. Dishes include the grilled haloumi (partnered with strawberry, balsamic and black pepper) and a Pina Colada dessert (where young coconut parfait, is partnered with brûlée and plantation rum). Cocktails are just as adventurous; the bar’s signature tipple is a take on the espresso martini, the Saving Grace Vodka, Espresso, and Salted Caramel. The decadent drink is served toppled with salty popcorn.
“We want to offer modern comfort and bistro food in our relaxed, fun and friendly environment,” explains executive chef Telina Menzies of State of Grace’s mantra. “Food and drinks will change seasonally with a strong focus on good, classic techniques and creative presentation to surprise and delight our loyal patrons.”
