Song Bird’s swan song will take place just short of a year after opening.
Neil Perry has just announced that Song Bird, his Chinese restaurant in Double Bay, will have its last service on Sunday, August 3, almost a year after opening. While it is sad news for lovers of the Chinese diner, they will have something new to look forward to. Cue: Gran Torino. The Italian restaurant will replace Song Bird just a week after it closes, opening on Saturday, August 9.
“With Song Bird, we missed the mark by creating a three-level Chinese restaurant in Double Bay,” Perry says. “Now, we’ve got the size right over two levels and – just as importantly – acoustics that have finally been tamed, we’re ready to move forward into a new future.
“The change to Gran Torino will be a better fit with Margaret, and the more approachable menu and laidback setting will have people wanting to return time and time again for drinks, casual bites and celebrations.”

The ground floor of Gran Torino will serve up an aperitivo menu inspired by the classic Italian bar. It will be the perfect spot for a Bellini, martini, snacks, small dishes and shared plates. Head upstairs to discover a 100-seat restaurant that will serve up a selection of antipasti, fresh pasta, produce-driven mains, and, of course, classic Italian desserts – because what Italian restaurant is complete without a tiramisu? The only correct answer to that is: none.
Margaret Family’s executive chef Richard Purdue will oversee the kitchen together with Ervin Mumujesi, who is currently head chef at Margaret. Song Bird head chef Mark Lee, who worked alongside Richard and Ervin at Margaret for three years, will move back to the mothership as head chef alongside Perry.
While details on Gran Torino are being kept under wraps, we’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
