Brisbane's oldest laneway is now home to its newest bar

Death & Taxes

There's no food, just cocktails at Queensland's latest drinking den.

‘Nothing is certain but death and taxes’ or so the adage goes. It’s a sentiment that has inspired Brisbane’s latest drinking den, the aptly named Death & Taxes, the latest venue from bar specialist Martin Lange that’s set to open on March 1.

Lange, the man behind fellow Brisbane venues Cobbler, Savile Row, and Finney Isles, as well as former West End favourite Sling Bar, is now moving into the CBD. Within historic Burnett Lane, the new bar will set up shop in a heritage-listed site that dates back to 1824.

In an ode to its heritage, Lange will be keeping Death & Taxes largely industrial in design. Similarly to Cobbler, there will be one central bar running the space’s length, accompanied by dark wood panelling and leather booths and stools on which to perch yourself for the night.

Taking inspiration from the bars of London and Paris, Death & Taxes will focus primarily on cocktails when it comes to drinks. A list of 30-strong  will be available alongside a long array of spirits, with drops ranging from rum to mescal, and local wines.

While your thirst will be well catered to at the bar, your hunger pangs won’t be quite so lucky with Lange confirming Death & Taxes won’t serve food. But that’s intentional, he explains, instead encouraging patrons to visit one of Burnett Lane’s many neighbouring eateries for a nibble post your drinking session.
