A slice of Brazil settles in the Hunter Valley

Mr Busby's

Think Brazil and more often than not you’ll think football and Carnivàle rather than cuisine. But a new arrival to the Hunter Valley is out to prove that the Latin American nation has plenty to offer in terms of edible delights.

Mr Busby’s has just arrived as a part of the revamped Dalwood Estate on the banks of the Hunter River. The eatery may be named after the man whose cuttings established the first vines on Australia’s oldest surviving vineyard, but the venue serves fare inspired by a country far, far away.

Mr Busby’s is a celebration of Brazilian barbecue, it’s the latest venture from the trio behind MEET in Newcastle; Luciano Cruz, Daniel Pires and local Mitchell Steel. Eager to spread the word (and flavour) of traditional Brazilian fare, the team expanded the concept to include event catering, and now another outlet with Mr Busby’s in the Hunter.

The latest casual eatery from the trio takes cues from MEET and is designed around lunch and breakfast, doling up heaped plates of Brazilian-inspired dishes all crafted from seasonal, local produce. Brazilian head chef Rafael Tonon is leading the charge, creating a menu overflowing with home-made sauces, rubs, and salsas, partnered with meats slow-cooked over wood and charcoal in the kitchen’s bespoke barbecue rotisserie.

“I grew up in a family of restaurateurs and chefs,” he says of the share concept of the venue. “I really wanted to bring the laughter and happiness of my childhood – which was always centred around food – to Mr Busby’s.” Mr Busby’s is open for breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday from 8.00am to 4.00pm.
