Sydney Fish Markets reveals $250 million makeover

Sydney Fish Market

You won't believe what the seafood hub now looks like.

Last year it was announced that the Sydney Fish Markets will be changing face. The much loved seafood hub received a $250 million cash injection (though now believed to be somewhat higher) from the NSW Government, with plans to relocate to a much larger (and sleeker) space in Blackwattle Bay.

Now we’ve been given a glimpse of the new markets in all their glory, which will sit on the southern side of the bay, neighbouring Wentworth Park. Designed by Danish architects 3XN, the new development is focused on convenience and innovation in equal measure.

It’s been  crafted for pedestrians and vehicles to happily coexist (those familiar with the traffic jams at the old site will be much relieved to hear no doubt). There is also a strong focus on improving access to public transport, with three light rail stops within walking distance and plans to welcome a direct ferry stop in time.

The design itself is also nothing short of statement-making. Conjured up in collaboration with Sydney firms BVN and Aspect Studios, the building features a timber and aluminium roof which floats over the multi-level space and resembles fish scales.

Within the complex will sit a cooking school, restaurants, bars, cafes, and a larger space on which the seafood auctions will take place. There’s also said to be an an amphitheatre of sorts in the works for public performances. Overall it’s an extended community offering for the markets, which are already the largest in the Southern Hemisphere

The new Sydney Fish Markets will open in 2023, with construction set to commence in mid 2019. During this time the existing Sydney Fish Markets will continue to trade as per usual.
