Greet the morning with Lankan Filling Station's exotic new brunch

Step aside toast; crab curry jaffles have just arrived.

Breakfasting on weekends tends to be a far different story to the morning meal indulged in from Monday to Friday. Without the demands of a commute or an early morning engagement to attend to, Saturday and Sunday offer first and foremost a little leisure time. In short, it’s the perfect occasion for brunch.

But for O Tama Carey of Sydney’s beloved Sri Lankan den Lankan Filling Station, brunch doesn’t equate to toast heaped with bacon and eggs. “My favourite breakfasts have always been Asian ones,” she says. “I love the savoury and spice aspect of them and so I thought we needed to do something like that at Lankan Filling Station.” The result of Carey’s interest in exotic starts is the addition of brunch to the Surry Hills eatery, a special mid-morning selection of dishes that will be available from 10am to 4pm weekends only. The usual menu will be available from midday on.

“Our new brunch menu leans towards our usual Lankan flavours and spice without just being a bowl of curry. There are some fruity things, some traditional dishes and our version of a great breakfast staple, a fried egg roll,” Carey explains. What she is referring to is a menu laden with crab curry jaffles (served with lime pickle and pol sambal) and toasted Godamba roti with bacon, green chilli and curry leaves. There’s also the aforementioned fried egg roll, served topped with fermented chilli and pol sambo, and designed to be partnered with an indulgent mango lassi of buffalo yoghurt.
