One of the curious things about the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list is that it actually goes to 100, writes Mariam Digges.

The World’s Best Restaurants last night revealed this year’s 51-100 list, featuring 11 new entries.

The coveted list includes debuts from San Francisco’s French-leaning Atelier Crenn at 83, Mexico’s Sud 777 at 75, Moscow’s Selfie came in at 88, and South Korea’s Mingles made number 89.

Barcelona’s Disfrutar, run by three former El Bulli chefs, also made the cut, debuting at no. 55, while Hiša Franko put Kobarid, Slovenia on the map.

Notable omissions from the list included Victoria’s Attica and Brae, suggesting the two restaurants may have made the touted top 50 cut, which will be revealed with much pomp and ceremony in Melbourne next week.

Peter Gilmore’s Quay was up three spots from last year at 95. It marks the ninth year that the harbourside restaurant has made the World’s Best Restaurants list, which was this year selected by a record 1,040 voters from around the word.

Judges can each cast ten votes, four of which must be for restaurants outside of their home region.

Singapore’s Burnt Ends, helmed by Perth chef David Pynt, came in at no. 53, while nearby Odette was the winner of the Highest New Entry at Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards, debuting at number 86.

And David Chang’s multi-course Momofuku Ko in New York has made a mighty leap, climbing 39 places to no. 58.

“As well as showcasing emerging talent and highlighting new culinary trends, this group also features perennial favourites that demonstrate enduring quality,” said William Drew, Group Editor of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants in a statement.

Hundreds of the world’s top chefs, critics and food identities will land in Melbourne next week for the esteemed awards ceremony, which will take over the Royal Exhibition Centre.
