The world’s cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant heads to Melbourne

Hawker Chan

Hawker Chan will open its doors by the end of 2017.

Proving that reaching deep into your pocket isn’t essential for a quality meal is Hawker Chan. The Singaporean food stall skyrocketed to fame when it was awarded one Michelin star as a part of the Singapore Michelin Guide in 2016.

It has since seen expansion with a number of different branches of the chain popping up across Asia. But now the Hawker Chan frenzy is about to hit much closer to home – in Melbourne to be specific. Chef Chan Hon Meng will be teaming up in a 50/50 partnership with the Hersing Culinary group to set up another of the quick-service restaurants, doling out servings of Chan’s famed Hong Kong-style soy chicken and rice.

The 100-seat eatery will set up shop in Lonsdale Street in October. It is likely that this will be the first of many launches in Australia for the Hawker Chan chain considering that Hersing Culinary is the business behind the Tim Ho Wan franchise empire.

Melbourne’s Hawker Chan will have a similar menu to the Singapore original stall, with a few local seasonal changes. All of the favourites will be available to enjoy – including the trademark crisp-skinned soy chicken and char siu (barbeque pork) which are served with rice or noodles.
