Recently settled into Sydney’s Hunter’s Hill is Boronia Kitchen; a casual eatery that comes courtesy of ex-Aria executive chef and longtime area resident Simon Sandall. The venue is focused on hearty breakfast and lunch fare, but also provides locals an after-hours option with a special dinner offering once the sun sets. Takeaway options also abound, with all dishes served both in-house and at-home crafted from locally sourced and seasonal ingredients.

Simon Sandall and Susan Sullivan are the business duo behind the new Sydney venue. Both come with ample experience in the hospitality world working together at MorSul for 17 years; Sullivan was the Group General Manager, and Sandall the executive chef at Aria, Chiswick, Aria Catering and the entire Morsul Group.

Organic ingredients are used where possible at Boronia, with Australian produce front and centre at the eatery. This extends to the takeaway menu, which Sandall says ranges from free-range rotisserie chickens, to house-smoked salmon, salads, tarts, and pies; all made on the premises. “As much as possible we have stuck to the ideal of home-made ingredients from the chutney in our sandwiches to the to the tomato sauce served with our pies,” Sandall explains.

There’s not just coffee available at this suburban cafe. Sommelier Luke Sullivan has taken care of the beverages available; the result being a concise list of Australian favourites, with a handful of international drops thrown in for good measure. The focus is on sustainable producers, mirroring Boronia’s edible offerings.

First and foremost, Boronia Kitchen is created by locals for locals, says Sullivan; it’s designed to be welcoming to locals both in food and in decor. “Boronia Kitchen is for the locals; warm and inviting, this is the venue I have always wanted to create,” says Sullivan. “An eatery for the community, we are the place everyone wants to have in their neighbourhood. We offer delicious food in a stylish, relaxed environment, a place to come with family and friends for lunch, coffee or dinner. We’ll also have honest, nourishing takeaway meals to simplify our time-poor customers’ lives – giving them great, homemade food to enjoy at home to make their lives easier, and better tasting.”
