Especially if you’re based around regional Nagambie. Because the rural district now boasts one of the country’s most design-savvy drinking establishments courtesy of the launch of the new Nagambie Brewery and Distillery. The multi-million dollar build sits just 90 minutes from Melbourne, tempting visitors courtesy of a concoction of unspoiled water views of neighbouring Lake Nagambie, sleek architecture, craft beers and spirits, and hearty pub grub. Nagambie Brewery is the project of businessman and local supporter Gerry Ryan, who has joined forces with Melbourne architecture firm Six Degrees on the new space.

The brewery isn’t just focused on its beer (though of course that’s an important component) but it hopes to drive further investment into the region and establish itself as a hub for the Nagambie community, showcasing the lake and region’s exceptional local produce of the region. “The Nagambie brewery and distillery is a unique offer for Nagambie, one that will generate employment, training and development opportunities for locals and attract tourism into our local region,” explains GM of Ryan’s hospitality ventures Reg Lodewyke.

Built on the site of an old police camp, Nagambie Brewery is a melting pot (pardon the pun) of concrete, steel and brass, and boasts floor-to-ceiling windows to best frame the neighbouring view of the lake. There’s two closed combustion fireplaces within to keep you warm once the cooler weather arrives. And for those sunny days, an expansive back deck space on which you can sit back and swig on a local creation.

It is after all, a brewery. “Bespoke beverage production will take centre stage at Nagambie Brewery and Distillery. We are focussed on creating an exceptional variety of beer and spirits, sourcing as many of our base ingredients from as close to our venue as possible,” says master brewer and distiller Jamie Chesher. “Our classic and simplistic approach is something that will set us apart from the bulk of the small-batch beverage industry. When it comes to being eco-friendly, we have tried everywhere possible to reduce our carbon footprint, recycle and reuse anything/everything we can, considering our environment at every opportunity.”

There are currently three beers in production, with plans confirmed for a gin, vodka and whisky to be released later in 2019. But in the meantime, you’ll still be able to grab something spirit-based (or wine for that matter) courtesy of a selection of ample beer, spirits, and wine on offer. To pair with your drink, tuck into food that comes courtesy of executive chef Dan Hawkins (Mitchelton, The Prince Hotel) who has created a menu of easy eats, with a particularly strong nod to traditional American smokehouses.

Currently under construction is the accompanying Ma Forbes Kitchen, located next door to the brewery and distillery. Named after local matriarch, Mrs. Amelia Forbes, this will be a more casual offering than the existing restaurant. A cafe of sorts set to serve up plates of hearty sandwiches, salads and baked goods, that will open this April.
