Went to See the Gypsy

No not the name of a song or a band, Went to See the Gypsy (WTSTG) is the latest addition to the growing Alexandria cafe scene. A sibling to Potts Point neighbourhood favourite Gypsy Espresso, the new warehouse-based outlet is a space set to expand on the original’s offering, both in terms of coffee and size (it’s ten times the size of the Inner East eatery). The newly launched cafe comes courtesy of Gypsy Espresso duo Mario Szucs and Will Smallbone, who see their latest addition as the flagship to the brand.

The space itself

Interiors have been taken care of by local design set Guru Project, who have crafted a space focused on the urban in design. The new look has utilised the pre-existing warehouse in which the new cafe sits, highlighting its exposed beams with polished concrete floors, rattan seating and (naturally) a custom-built Brew Bar featuring white Fibonacci terrazzo and brass accents.

The Brew Bar

The main star of Went to See the Gypsy is undoubtedly specialist coffee experience the Brew Bar, which features an under-the-counter Mod Bar (the first of its kind in the Inner West). What does this mean? That the coffee machine will no longer block your view of the barista, and guests will instead be able to get up close and personal with the specialty coffee making experience. Leading the charge on the coffee front is head barista Simon Gautherin, who boasts a certified Q-Grader qualification, and will be pouring out cups of single origin on rotation, including a signature blend roasted at their headquarters.

The menu

The menu at Went to See the Gypsy is promised to be fresh and seasonal, with an array of all-day breakfast dishes on the cards. Greet the morning with plates of toasted banana loaf topped with brulee banana, coconut milk sorbet and salted caramel, or the more savoury Meredith Goats Cheese and kale truffled smashed eggs partnered with pesto. Those after something heartier will find a friend in the Gypsy Burger, made from grass-fed beef, sesame brioche, smoked bacon and zucchini pickle.
