Brisbane hotspot Alfred & Constance is closing down

Alfred & Constance

It's bad news for fans of the Fortitude Valley drinking den.

Alfred & Constance may have once been one of Fortitude Valley’s favourite drinking spots, but that all looks set to change with the news that the elaborate restaurant and bar will be shutting up shop.

A court loss for former owner Damian Griffiths brought forward by family has seen the party venue fall into the hands of receivers. This means that the bar, as well as on-site restaurant Kwan Brothers and Alf’s Place are in limbo when it comes to trade, remaining closed until further notice. Receivers will also take control of the neighbouring Limes Hotel.

It’s reported that staff were told of the closure through an internal rostering app. “Damian has fought hard over the past years to keep the doors open but yesterday the final blow came when he lost a court action brought on by his own cousin and aunt. The result of that decision has meant we are now in default with our bank, they now forced us into a position where they will step in and take back the property and the business.”

It’s not all bad news for fans of the venue though, with it likely that trade will be resumed by new owners at some point in the near future. Damian Griffiths also owns a number of surrounding businesses including Doughnut Time, Chester Street Bakery, Les Bubbles, Mister Fitz. At this point all remain unaffected by the closure.
