Meet Jane, a 70's-inspired brasserie from the team behind Arthur

Jane 1

We’ve made friends with Arthur, now it’s time to get to know Jane.

Chef Tristan Rosier is expanding his mark on the Surry Hills dining scene with his new restaurant, Jane – the little sister to his award-winning, degustation restaurant Arthur.

Arthur and Jane may live just a few blocks apart along Bourke St, Surry Hills, but like all siblings, they have distinct personalities.

While Arthur is the high-achieving older sibling, Jane is taking the natural role of younger sisters and will be a little more fun and a lot more casual.

The idea is that you celebrate the big nights out at Arthur and hang out with Jane a few times a week when you want something lighter than the full degustation experience.

Jane, which is due to open late November, will be a casual, a-la-carte all-day dining and cocktail bar.

Solo diners can pop in for an aperitif and selection of cured meats while sitting at the three-layered red marble bar with brass inlay. Couples can get cosy in the two-seater booths as they sip chilled glasses of wine and snack on plates of cold seafood. Groups will get comfortable at the custom-built, eight-seater marble table as they spin the lazy Susan and feast on generous dishes such as whole roast duck, tomahawk steak and BBQ’d southern lobster.

Jane is setting up in the old Ume site and Rosier has enlisted architects Luchetti Krelle to reimagine the space. The 30-seat diner will boast a heritage brass-framed window dressed with sheers and the building’s original double doors will swing open to a beautifully rich, autumnal colour palette which includes classic red marble, vegetable tan leather and warm brass tones.

Named after Rosier’s grandmother, the restaurant will evoke the spirit of an informal 1970’s-inspired brasserie.

“Arthur has become a dining destination, so we wanted to create a less formal space which our local community could come and enjoy multiple times per week, whether it be a great cocktail, after-work drinks, or dinner with friends,” Rosier says.

“Jane will be a lot more versatile. We will be the anchor of the neighbourhood, serving everything from delicious wines by the glass, world-class cocktails, snacks or a three-course meal.”

Like Arthur, Jane will continue Rosier’s Australian-only focus. Arthur alumni Victoria Scriven (ex-Ester) will take on the head chef role and Kevin Oh from Arthur will now oversee both kitchens.

Jane will open on 478 Bourke Street, Surry Hills this month.
