Jock Zonfrillo's revamped bistro arrives in Adelaide

Bistro Blackwood

“We are giving the classic bistro an Australian accent.”

The traditional bistro has been given an overhaul at Adelaide’s latest dining scene addition. Bistro Blackwood has just landed, the latest venture from the much-lauded Scottish chef Jock Zonfrillo.

Bistro Blackwood replaces the former Restaurant Blackwood, which sits underneath Jock’s fine dining institution Restaurant Orana. The new space emerged after a two-week overhaul, in which it was given an eclectic look of old-fashioned wooden chairs, booth seating, schoolhouse lighting and white marble tables to offset its marshmallow pink and navy blue walls.

The menu equally makes a statement. Jock is passionate about native Australian ingredients and hopes to bring their versatility and flavour to a broader audience with his takes on bistro fare. “We are giving the classic bistro an Australian accent,” explains Zonfrillo. “It’s not your typical French or Italian bistro because it embraces indigenous Australian ingredients. The menu shares Orana’s DNA but at an approachable, everyday price.”

The frequently changing menu currently includes a 450g rib-eye accompanied with eucalyptus potatoes, and a fire-pit kangaroo with broccoli leaves, quinoa and spiced yoghurt. A 40-strong wine list accompanies the meal offering, one which focuses on local suppliers. Guests will also have access to the 400-strong bottle list from adjoining Restaurant Orana, curated by sommelier Brent Mayeaux.

Interestingly the same floor and kitchen staff will work across both Restaurant Orana and Bistro Blackwood. It was a decision made in the hopes of encouraging the collaboration of ideas and techniques, and further the skills of the team.  “As a restaurateur and a chef, it is imperative for me to give back to my staff and give them the tools to be successful when they leave the nest,” comments Jock.
