Shar and Yuta Kobayashi, the duo behind Toji Sake have joined forces with chef Dan Chan (Yardbird, Supernormal Canteen) to create Eazy Peazy, an unfussed yakitori joint in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond.

Head chef Dan Chan has put together an approachable menu made up of yakitori skewers and finger-friendly Japanese-style snacks. The list starts with J-popcorn doused in seaweed butter and nori, then follows up with yakitori skewers brushed in a sweet soy tare sauce. As per the Japanese tradition, they use all bits of the bird, including thigh, breast, wings and heart. If you want to make it real easy on yourself, they also do a ‘feed me’ omakase menu paired with bottomless sake.

Eazy Peazy’s own brand Toji Sake will spill across much of the drinks menu. There are two to choose from, a high-grade Daiginjo sake and a lighter, drier Ginjo sake, which reveals subtle kiwifruit flavours. Order them by the cup, carafe or have them shaken into cocktails, like the Shiso Crazy, made from white rum, junmai sake and shiso leaves. There’s also Kirin on tap, bottled craft beers and a predominantly Australian wine list.

Carr Design has curated the interiors, which pay homage to the Land of the Rising Sun as well as the art of sake brewing. Entrance doors are inspired by the raked sand in zen gardens while walls are rendered to resemble the terraced rice fields of the Niigata Prefecture. The refined aesthetic is interspersed with fun and playful elements, including projections of Tokyo’s famed Shibuya Crossing.
