From the owners of Da Long Yi and Gotcha Fresh Tea comes a new hot pot restaurant that offers a Thai take on the usual Sichuan soup.
The interiors
Not your usual backstreet haunt, this lush two-storey venue has been decked out in dusty pink and forest green with abundant indoor plantings. Plush circular booths ensure everyone gets a fair stab of the bubbly Thai cauldron.
The hot pot
Choose from a tom yum or tom kha gai soup broth, or the two-in-one split pot which offers a taste of each. Each pot comes with a platter of fresh seafood, think skewered prawns, shellfish and squid, and vegetables like corn, lotus root and mushrooms.
The food
Translating to “get all the fish together”, Jiyu also has a strong seafood offering. The house specialty is a crab and lobster curry, however, you can also order salmon and prawn sashimi, stir-fried pipis and stuffed oysters.
The drinks
Cool down with a classic mojito or try one of the refreshing non-alcoholic drinks, which include a watermelon juice or homemade sparkling grapefruit drink.
Getting there
Jiyu is slated to open December 16, 2019 at 208 Little Bourke Street, Melbourne. For more details, head to lovejiyu.com.au.
