Dinner party faux pas have always been around, from elbows on the table to turning your back on other guests. However modern day dinner parties present a whole new set of no-noes that must be avoided. Our very own ILVENISTA (aka pro entertainer) Melissa Hoyer shows us how to successfully play the dinner party game.

When hosting a dinner party, it’s okay to set some rules. These guidelines will help to avoid both the classic and new age faux pas and set the tone.

Always on the phone

What’s the go with everyone being switched on all the time? Sure guests have to check in with a babysitter or grab a snap, maybe even tweet. Sometimes, it is nice to switch off and enjoy the company and the surroundings. There is nothing worse for the host than to see all the guests looking bored to death on their phones, and also for the guests to see the host constantly glaring down at their phone. There is a simple solution, however. Pop them all in a glass in the middle of the table or just turn them off and enjoy the company.

Large numbers

When hosting a dinner party, it is best to avoid large numbers. As a general rule, go with 10, maybe 12 guests, as any more is a bit of a push for the host to get around and mingle with everybody. It’s also best to keep it to one long table. This way, the host can get around to everyone and none of the guests feel left out or secluded if they are at the end.

Table decorations

Dinner parties are a lot more casual these days, but basic decorations can make the table look and feel more inviting. There is no need to spend or buy a lot to make the table look beautiful. Use simple things around the home or garden – stuff that is already easily available to you. Try leaves, a candle or even fresh flowers floating in water. They don’t have to match. The decorations are there to create the essence and feel of the dinner party.

Seating guests

Dinner parties are great to invite someone a bit left of field, however there is a real art in matching personalities when seating people. Go with a seating plan, consider who is invited and match people who would be compatible and seat them with each other. This way the conversation flows easily. A big no-no is inviting all couples and one single friend. You need to make sure all your guests will be comfortable.

Cancelling at the last minute

Today, for people to take the time to cook and host friends is a big deal. Sometimes, last-minute things will pop up and plans change but it is important to let the host know as soon as possible. Be sure to send a bottle of red to make it up for the last-minute cancellation.
