Australian-style sushi is a thing and the internet is only just learning about it

Avocado sushi rolls

That's just how we roll.

An ‘Aussie-style’ sushi counter has opened in New York’s West Village and folks are confused. Apparently, the sushi rolls that we know and love from every food court in Australia are a foreign concept to New Yorkers and TikTok has jumped on the bandwagon with more than a few asking ‘huh?’

The sushi counter sells half a dozen varieties like spicy tuna, teriyaki chicken and salmon with avocado, complete with tiny fish soy sauce squeezers, all standing up like soldiers in a refrigerated glass counter.  Yes, I am describing a standard Aussie sushi stop. No, it’s not a thing everywhere else.

The Australian version of the sushi roll is, of course, just a modified temaki roll – an unsliced hand roll that is common in Japan – but that hasn’t stopped a flood of commenters on a TikTok posted by user boujeebitesonly experiencing the typical Australian sushi.

“so they’re like handrolls? or uncut …rolls?” asked one user.

“Me, an Australian, realising that sushi isn’t like this everywhere.” said an Australian having an epiphany.

While New Yorkers attempt to grapple with the concept of an unsliced sushi roll and whether it’s culturally appropriate or not, we can’t help but feel grateful for this easy, affordable, and apparently “Aussie” snack.
