No, it’s not just fruity.

There are certain flavours that we just accept as flavours in this world. Thins Light & Tangy is one (and, if we’ve piqued your interest on what flavours are used to make Light & Tangy, click here to find out) as is Rainbow Paddle Pop. One that recently baffled the delicious. team is tutti frutti. What flavour is tutti frutti? We know it’s something fruity, but what fruit exactly? In our true hard-hitting journalists’ nature, we couldn’t let the question rest. So we did some digging.

Let’s begin with the name. The origin of the flavour ‘tutti frutti’ is Italian and translates to ‘all fruits’, which is fitting, considering how hard it is to pinpoint what the sweet, tangy flavour actually tastes like. Turns out, tutti frutti is a blend of tropical fruits, berries and citrus, which gives it its signature sweet and tangy flavour.

Tutti frutti flavour actually dates back to the 1800s, but its true origin is debatable. First conceived as an ice-cream flavour that consisted of cherries, watermelon, raisins, pineapple and sometimes nuts, it then became one of the first gum flavours to be sold in a vending machine, created by Adams New York Gum Company in 1888.

So there you have it, folks. Add that to the fun facts catalogue you can pull out at the next dinner party.
