A guide to the laneway city’s standout drinking dens.
Longsong
A recent addition to Melbourne’s nightlife is the clandestine Longsong. It sits above the much-loved Longrain and is the creation of famed ex-Franklin chef David Moyle. The result is a haven of bites, highlighting local producers and ingredients, cooked only on a woodfire grill. Plus, don’t miss the impressive beverage list curated by drinks critic Mike Bennie.

Arlechin
Arlechin is a night owl’s haven. The Grossi family’s late-night venture serves up the Italian fare for which they’re renowned, accompanied by a similarly Italian beverage list that is available until an impressive 3am. The 40-seater CBD sanctuary may be small but it packs a punch, offering suave food and drink in equally sleek surrounds.

Neptune Food & Wine
The Mediterranean theme reigns supreme in Windsor’s Neptune. The joint endeavour is run by hospitality guns Nic Coulter and Simon Blacher (of Hanoi Hannah, Saigon Sally and Tokyo Tina), and brothers Dave and Michael Parker (Pastuso and San Telmo). The two-storey, 140-seater is a moody space to while away a few hours, snacking on canned seafood, and a bottle from the 300-strong wine list.

Union Electric
A twist on the traditional is the mantra embraced by this Melbourne drinking haven. Craft drinks are the laneway venue’s specialty, with many a unique cocktail combination that utilises and supports local suppliers. Added bonus goes to the recent addition of a gin-focused bar on the rooftop.

Arbory
Making a home for itself alongside Flinders Street Station is Arbory. Nestled along the Yarra River’s banks, the outdoor bar and restaurant stretches a dramatic 150 metres in length. The trio of two bars and one restaurant that form the venue are housed within a repurposed former shipping container, surrounded by ample deck on which you can sit back and enjoy one of the many craft beers or ciders on offer.
