Speedy delivery service Milk Run is back after being bought by Woolworths

And its network will expand to over 500 suburbs across Sydney, Melbourne, Newcastle, Canberra, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Just two months after announcing a surprise and immediate closure, super-fast grocery delivery service Milk Run is back as part of an acquisition by shopping giant Woolworths.

On April 14, a company-wide email from the company’s founder and CEO, Dany Milham, cited deteriorating economic conditions as the culprit of the brand’s sudden demise. The writing was on the wall, however, when Milk Run let go of 20 percent of their staff in February 2023.

An Instagram post announced that Woolworth’s Metro60 service will now be rebranded to ‘MILKRUN powered by Metro.’ According to the Milk Run website, the brand that previously serviced just a handful of inner-city suburbs in Sydney and Melbourne will now be available to more than 500 suburbs across Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Newcastle, Brisbane and the Gold Coast by using existing Metro60 outposts.

The closure of Milk Run was the last in a string of similar ‘instant’ delivery services to cease operation, following in the footsteps of Voly, Providoor, CoLab and Send, leaving thousands of permanent staff out of work. In his April announcement, Milham assured “We’ve always been committed to doing things the right way, and winding down the business while we still have a sufficient cash balance enables us to ensure our people and suppliers are paid in full.”

The new ‘MILKRUN powered by Metro’ will not be providing secure, salaried employment though, instead opting to utilise the comparably underregulated gig economy structure. Metro60 currently fulfils most of its orders with Uber drivers, which will continue with the rebrand to include Milk Run.
