Can't hear yourself think? This app connects diners with quiet restaurants

The ambiance of a restaurant can make or break your dining experience. For many, the hum of conversation and the clinking of glasses are the perfect soundtrack. However, what happens when the pub starts to feel a bit more like a club? Is it ever okay to ask a restaurant to turn the music down?

Restaurant owners carefully curate the atmosphere of their establishments. The choice of music, lighting, and decor all contribute to a specific vibe. It’s essential to acknowledge that not every restaurant is meant to cater to all tastes and preferences. While some places thrive on a lively, energetic atmosphere, others may prefer a quieter, more intimate setting. One venue can’t, and shouldn’t be all things to all people.

On the other hand, there are plenty of valid reasons for a guest to request that the volume isn’t cranked up to 11.

Some folks might be hard of hearing, a potentially frustrating challenge in and of itself. Neurodivergent people, such as those with sensory sensitivities, can find loud spaces overwhelming. You may need to have a serious conversation or conduct business over dinner. Whatever your reason for wanting a quiet space, no one wants to be stuck at the end of a table politely nodding while pretending to know what is being talked about.

The easiest way to avoid an uncomfortable situation for yourself and the restaurant staff is to know what you’re getting into before you book.

The Ambient Menu is an app developed by audiologist Laura Drexler, who researched the isolating effects that loud environments have on the hard of hearing, and by extension, other communities that struggle in the same situations. During her studies, Drexler found that many subjects would rather miss out on catching up with their friends than go through the stress of coping in a loud environment.

The Ambient Menu is a crowd-sourced site designed to connect people with restaurants better suited to their needs. Active members report their experiences and categorise them by noise level (quiet, low, moderate, lively) and location. Other search filters include dietary preferences, cuisine, and price points.

Why do restaurants play loud music?

Restaurants are inherently noisy places, from the clanging of pots and pans, to conversation and laughter bouncing off the walls, and music aiming to drown that all out.

Good food, good music, good conversation and good service make for a memorable experience. That looks like a lot of different things to different people. While restaurant owners aim to create unique atmospheres, there is also an understanding that customers have diverse needs and preferences. It’s all about striking a balance to ensure everyone can enjoy their dining experience, one decibel at a time. The Ambient Menu is a clever bridge to do just that. Check it out at the website.
