Across the nation, chocolate lovers are torn. This is a critical debate and we need your opinion. Which is the better honeycomb bar? Is it Cadbury’s Crunchie, or Menz’s Violet Crumble?

Both are staples in their respective brands’ chocolate offering, and have been around for yonks. While honeycomb may be an acquired taste for some, this debate has been a hot topic for an equal amount of yonks.

I’ll admit straight up – I’m not a die-hard fan of either. I ate them here and there as a kid, but I’m not – by any means – running a niche honeycomb blog or plastering empty wrappers across my walls. When I stroll down Woolies’ confectionary aisle, I usually fang for a Cherry Ripe. So if anything, this is a mostly unbiased decision.

In officially trialling both as an adult, I’ve made a few observations.

The Crunchie retains its number one Favourites box stature, and it’s a pleasure to eat. Sweet and sturdy – just as I remember it.

The Violet Crumble surprised me though. While a bit more crumbly (duh!) than the Crunchie, after a few chews, a light and welcome umami flavour came through. Has it always tasted this way?

After many financial minutes of deep reflection and soul searching, I’ve made my choice.

For me, the clear winner is Violet Crumble. The two are so very similar, but VC pulls through in the last leg with that (perhaps phantom) salt-ish twist.

Please don’t cancel me! I will happily eat either when offered, but for now, I’ll stick to my trusty Cherry Ripe.
