8 Aldi dupes that are better than the real thing
The Devil works hard but the ALDI legal team works harder. From their Fraser Briggs light beer that is definitely not just James Boags, to the Fruit Loops, sorry, Fruit Rounds complete with a happy parrot mascot – the German supermarket is stacked with off-brand dupes. And while it may be fun to giggle at the audacious same-but-different brand names, there are plenty of products that shoppers swear are better than the original. These are the tried and tested ALDI dupes that pass the test.
Blackstone chips
The ALDI chip label Blackstone (no, not Red Rock) is a superior chippie brand. Flavours like sour cream and chive, Thai chilli and coconut, wasabi mayo etc, the Blackstone chips feel crispier than the name-brand snacks and don’t scrimp on the seasoning.
Gianni's Mini Choc Sticks
The chocolate coating on the ALDI “Magnums” is thicker and snappier than the original and we will not be told differently. The mixed box comes with a triple threat of milk chocolate, almond, and white chocolate, and for a fraction of the price of a real Magnum, it’s a dangerous combo.
Snackers Market Cheese Streamers
Sure, string cheese might not be the most sophisticated snack but the ALDI Cheese Streamers are saltier and stringier than Bega Cheese Stringers – and we reckon they’re better too.
Clancy's Kettle Chips
Clancy’s Kettle Chips aren’t always available in ALDI but when they hit shelves, you’d better run. The thick-cut kettle chips might look unassuming but with flavours like Mesquite Barbecue or regular old salt and vinegar, the crunchy chips are less oil-logged than many other kettle chips and are worth stocking up on.
Chicken Crinkle Snakos
Don’t get us wrong, we love a Chicken Crimpy Shape as much as the next MSG addict, but the knock-off Chicken Crinkle Snakos are far more flavourful, packed to the top of the bag and are smaller, meaning more flavour and less surface area. It’s a no-brainer.
Wild Origins Sourdough
This one is a bit controversial because the ALDI sourdough might not be technically ‘better’ than Sonoma sourdough, simply because it is Sonoma sourdough. Made under Sonoma’s Wild Origins masthead, even the addresses on the back of the products are the same.
South Island Butter
Some live on the Mainland, and others on the South Island. Either way, we’re convinced that these two products are the same thing, and if not, the ALDI South Island butter is very convincing. Bonus points for topography. Other delightfully delicious knock-offs include Not Olive Grove, Not Western Star, and Not Lurpak.
