Basically, a Girl Dinner is a grazing board of all of your favourite nibbly bits. A few pieces of cheese, some fruit, crackers, cucumbers, pickles, whatever little snacks you’re craving and, if you’re like me, a glass of wine or two. Not sure about you but to be honest, it sounds like heaven. It also sounds a lot like how I feed my kid (minus the wine, that’s for Mummy). Throw everything onto a plate and fend for yourself.
What is a ‘Girl Dinner’, and why is it going viral on TikTok?
Love it or hate it, TikTok sure knows how to set a trend, and I’ve found one that I am wholeheartedly getting behind: the Girl Dinner. It’s a phenomenon that looks a lot like a ploughman’s board, and involves satisfying all of your snacky cravings.
How do you make a Girl Dinner?
Think about what snacks you’re craving and that’s pretty much it. Slices of peach, cherry tomatoes, olives, strawberries, some hard or soft cheese, boiled eggs, prosciutto, some croutons or bread and a flourish of olive oil on your favourite plate. Cue FBoy Island and pour a rosé and that’s your Girl Dinner sorted.
Why is the Girl Dinner so satisfying?
Since the trend emerged on TikTok, various nutritionists have weighed in on the benefits of the Girl Dinner and in a delightful twist, they’re stoked we’re actually eating a balanced meal. This style of grazing keeps our palates interested and because of the various textures, mouthfeels, the contrast of salty, sweet, and acid as well as healthy fats like olive oil or avocado, we’re less likely to overeat out of boredom.
So, is it good for you?
Australian nutritionist Nadia Felsch said on her TikTok account that as a fat-positive, feminist practitioner she encourages her clients to eat in the Girl Dinner style whenever they like, especially if it makes your diet more varied, interesting, balanced and overall more satisfying. “This counts! This is feeding yourself. If this makes eating easier and more exciting… why not?”
