Simply the zest: a new seedless lemon variety is hitting supermarkets

Seedless lemons

It's putting the squeeze on the competition.

It’s finally happening. Seedless lemons are a reality.

No more must we sift through our salad dressing for those slippery little suckers. Never again will we chomp down on a bitter lemon seed mid-meal. Thanks to Nutrano Produce Group’s Farm Patch seedless lemons, we can make lemonade no matter what cards life deals us.

The Nutrano lemons aren’t the first seedless citrus to hit the Australian market, rather they join a handful of existing seedless varieties including the Wonderful Seedless lemons and the Eureka Seedless lemons. The addition of another seedless lemon variety to the market does however mean the pip-free forms are becoming more accessible to a larger customer base.

So how are these seedless wonders created? You’ll be pleased to know that the process is far less invasive than you might think. Totally seedless lemons do occur – although rarely – without any intervention. When a farmer finds a seedless lemon tree, they will graft a cutting of that tree into the rootstock of another.

Fruit forms after a flowering plant is pollinated – the birds and the bees chat will help you here – which also results in natural seed development. In rare cases, mutations occur and fruit grows without fertilisation and without the seeds that typically accompany it. Farmers found a way to propagate these rare instances and encourage the future growth of seedless plants through grafting techniques.

Of course, seedless fruit varieties aren’t a failsafe option, supply can rarely keep up with demand, and nor should it. Bees and natural pollination are an important part of the big picture but if it means one less hassle when cooking for a crowd, we’ll take the seedless any day.

Farm Patch Seedless lemons are available now in selected greengrocers and retailers in Queensland and NSW.
