They're bringing brandy back.

Bickford’s has opened the new 23rd Street Distillery in the restored century-old Renmano winery site in Renmark after a $6.6 million redevelopment.

It’s where they’ll be creating four new craft spirits, including whisky and a signature gin. But, their main focus will be resurrecting brandy – that distilled wine once reserved as your grandparents’ favourite nightcap – as the next go-to craft spirit.

Their existing Black Bottle brandy and Vickers gin brands will also be distilled on site.

“Indeed, we’re being encouraged to be inventive and innovative…and in the process, reignite brandy, give it a healthy dose of cool and captivate new consumers with a drink they thought was only for their nannas,” head distiller Graham Buller said.

As such, the brandy line has been aptly named, ‘Not Your Nanna’s’.

A $2.3 million State Government grant was donated to the family-owned business in the hopes it will help pull in 30,000 visitors to the state’s Riverland region each year. Bickford’s Group Owner Angelo Kotses thinks the new distillery marks a new era of spirit-making in SA.

“We anticipate it will signal the rebirth of distilling in South Australia, while tapping into the craft renaissance that’s already prevalent in areas such as coffee and beer,” Mr Kotses said.
