What's the early-bird special?

A restaurant in the US is making headlines for its unexpected age policy. While it’s not uncommon for establishments to bar those under 21 in the US, Bliss Caribbean Restaurant has determined that many of those in their 30s are now off the guest list.

Bliss Caribbean Restaurant in St. Louis, opened its doors in May and has quickly attracted attention with its age restrictions. Owner Marvin Pate (36), and assistant manager Erica Rhodes (presumably over 30) explained to KSDK that Bliss aims to be an upscale destination for Caribbean cuisine.

To maintain this vibe, they’ve decided men under 35 and women under 30 won’t make the cut, meeting at the intersection of ageism and sexism.

According to KSDK, if you look young and try to visit Bliss after 7pm from Wednesday to Sunday, prepare to have your ID checked by the restaurant’s hosts or, sometimes, a St. Louis County police officer. In a recent Facebook post, the restaurant shed some light on the policy. You can’t fault them for their conviction.

The May 29 post reads, ”Recently, we have had incidents where our age requirement has been violated and put on social media.

“To reiterate, Bliss Caribbean Restaurant requires all guests to be 30 or older for women and 35 or older for men. This policy is in place to ensure a mature, sophisticated, and safe dining environment for everyone.”

It’s like being sat at the kid’s table at Christmas even though you’ve been registered to vote for a decade.
