Just in time for World Egg Day.

To say that Australians are passionate about their eggs would be an understatement, considering we tuck into 6 billion eggs a year on average.

But how to we prefer to consume them? While that may have been up for debate, the score is about to be settled thanks to the launch of Australian Eggs’ launch of the Eggsellence Awards. The campaign was launched to align with World Egg Day on Friday October 12 to determine just what is the most popular egg dish in Australia. Residents have been asked to help, encouraged to nominate their favourite restaurants and give them a chance to cook their dish for a panel of acclaimed judges.

“With Australians eating nearly 17 million eggs every day it’s exciting to embark on this journey to find Australia’s best egg dish,” explains managing director of Australian Eggs Rowan McMonnies. “The rise of café culture and food fashion has changed perceptions of how and when eggs can be eaten so we are expecting a stream of nominations from across Australia. Eggs are a big part of our culture, from eating egg soldiers as children to making the grandchildren’s birthday cake, we consume them almost every day. As we launch the Australian Eggsellence Awards we want to hear about everything from simple eggs on toast to inspired new egg creations; so get nominating!”

Australians nationwide were encouraged submit an outstanding egg dish of their choice. The nominated restaurants were then whittled down to a top 5, with the chefs from each shortlisted space set to battle it out for the winning title in a live cook-off. The public were invited to taste the dishes alongside official judges celebrity chef Manu Feildel, National Restaurant Critic at delicious. magazine, Anthony Huckstep, and Freelance Food Critic for The Australian, Elizabeth Meryment. As for the winner, that was dubbed to be the Baghdad Eggs dish created by Lauren Brown of The Blue Swimmer in Gerroa.
