And the winner may surprise you.
While Melbourne and Sydney undoubtedly lay home to the bevy of best restaurants across Australia (if not Australasia for that matter), it seems that there is still plenty of special eateries to be found elsewhere. Namely South Australia.
The state has just won a major accolade, taking out the Best Restaurant Design 2017 as a part of the Eat Drink Design Awards released today. The eatery in question? Viet Next Door (designed by Genesin Studio) in Pennington.
Of course New South Wales was not to be outshone, dominating the awards as a whole with three venues named as winners in their respective categories. Campos Barangaroo (designed by Woods Bagot) took out Best Retail Design, while Noma Australia (designed by Foolscap Studio) claimed the title of Best Installation Design.Surry Hills favourite The Dolphin Hotel (designed by George Livissianis) in Paddington was awarded Best Bar Design.
New South Wales was also home to the latest addition to the awards’ Hall of Fame. Potts Point institution Fratelli Paradiso (designed by the late Mike Murphy) was handed the accolade, an acknowledgement to the venue’s continued dedication to design in a period longer than 10 years.
Melbourne didn’t even make the cut this year – it was Victoria’s regional offerings that shone for the state. Morris and Heath (designed by Ritz& Ghougassian) which sits 25km away from the city, took out Best Café Design, while new addition Jackalope Hotel on the Mornington Peninsula won Best Identity Design (designed by Fabio Ongarato Design).
“This year’s entries were united by a sweeping sense of ambition across all categories – one focused on careful detail,” explains jury chair Cassie Hansen of this year’s winners. “Within the scope of such ambition we saw more genteel and conservative entries, and entries with irony, verve and wit. The winners in each category display multiple such qualities, combined with a sense of rigour in the application of detail and materials.”
