All in the name of safety.
There are few things more Australian than a Bunnings’ sausage sizzle. The weekly barbecue has found cult-like fame among the masses, its popularity never the more evident than in the most recent scandal to hit the snag-favouring event.
Specifically, Bunnings, creator of said sausage sizzle, have announced that the dish as we know it is about to change. The optional fried onion addition that graces most of the snags bought will now be placed underneath the sausage rather than on top. This was deemed a safety measure, with the company quoting that fallen onion is a slipping hazard for shoppers.
Today co-host Karl Stefanovic was just one of many outraged by the news. “This will ruin Australia,” he claimed, “Australia will not make it through today if this happened. Bunnings, you’ve done a lot of things right. But, I’m sorry, you’ve got this one wrong. You don’t mess with perfection.”
Social media has fallen into a frenzy since news of the safety proposal broke. News.com said that its social media pages were littered with those complaining about the ‘red tape overkill’ taking over the nation.
But Bunnings chief operating officer Debbie Poole told News.com it was a move made in the interest of customer safety. “Safety is always our number one priority and we recently introduced a suggestion that onion be placed underneath sausages to help prevent the onion from falling out and creating a slipping hazard,” she said.
“This recommendation is provided to the community groups within their fundraising sausage sizzle welcome pack and is on display within the gazebos when barbecues are underway.”
Poole believes that #oniongate won’t last long. “Regardless of how you like your onion and snag, we are confident this new serving suggestion will not impact the delicious taste or great feeling you get when supporting your local community group.”
