Cookies for a cause

Girl-Guides

There's never been a better reason to have some with your afternoon tea.

What do Michelle Obama, Margaret Fulton and Gwyneth Paltrow have in common? Apart from being inspiring role models, they all spent time selling cookies and biscuits as Girl Scouts or Girl Guides.

After over 50 years of biscuit dealing in Australia, Girl Guides have stepped up their game and added three new flavours to their iconic annual biscuit offering. Triple chocolate, gluten-free shortbread and bite-sized chocolate ‘Bush Buddies’ biscuits (perfect for lunchboxes) are added to the original vanilla biscuits to make sure they’re going to sell out in no time. This year has seen also seen a return to local biscuit production.

delicious. Chief Subeditor Heidi Finnane knows a thing or two about the biscuits, a love affair that goes back 20 years to her time as a Girl Guide. “Girl Guide biscuits are serious flashback territory for me,” she says. “While I always tried to be a good Girl Guide (emphasis on tried), selling biscuits was never much my forte – but eating them was another story. I remember winter holidays when my sister and I were supposed to sell the biscuits, but ended up forcing our mum to buy them instead so we could eat them all.”

Since 1910 the Girl Guides have been empowering young women from 5 to 17 years old to be confident and responsible community members, and an annual biscuit drive throughout May and June encourages the girls to raise funds for new equipment, camps and Girl Guide adventures, as well as giving them valuable life skills.

Finnane might be hoping she can convince her mum to shell out for the biscuits again this year, just so she can try the new range. “The traditional biscuits are great, but I’m was really excited to try the new range. The triple choc has a great fudgy centre.”

The biscuits will be available at local Bunning’s, guide halls and shopping centres throughout June and July. To find your closest source stay up to date with listings here.
