The good folks at Costco have always been one to embrace the buying in bulk philosophy and now, they’ve got your backs should an Apocalypse hit.
The American members-only retail giants recently announced they’re selling doomsday-prepper food kits that can feed a family of four for an entire year.
Ranging in price from $US1,000 to $US6,000, the kits contain products with extended shelf lives (most will make it to the 25 year mark) like instant lentils and black beans, freeze-dried green beans, broccoli, corn, and dehydrated apples.
Other foods you and your fam will be feasting on for the year include elbow pasta, hard white wheat, white rice, quick oats, instant milk, pinto beans, dehydrated potatoes, beef, chicken, butter powder, sugar, onions, salt, freeze-dried banana slices, blueberries, and carrots.
The cheapest kit contains 96 cans of food and can apparently feed one person for a year while the pimped-out $US6,000 kit features 600 cans of food and will feed a family of four for a year, according to Costco.
“Enjoy the comfort in knowing you have the essential foods your family will need to survive an emergency or natural disaster!” Costco says on its website.
Costco also makes a point of saying the kits are “packaged discreetly for privacy in shipping” but then, according to one customer’s review on their website, they weigh in at a hefty 816kg, so we’re not entirely convinced your neighbours won’t be onto you.
So, why the heck are the doomsday kits being sold? Costco has stocked emergency prep kits since at least 2010 but according to The New York Times, interest in the kits has skyrocketed after mounting tensions between the US and North Korea, leading to the newer, larger kits.
It’s not just those prepping for Armageddon or a nuclear war who stand to win with the doomsday kits; as one savvy customer pointed out on Costco’s website, “This meal kit is delish and nutrish! Perfect for preppers who want to prepare for the apocalypse or lazy guys like me who only want to shop once a year.”
Wise words, RockFootlongHotDog. Costco may have just taken meal prep to the next level.
There’s no news as yet as to whether the kits will begin selling in Australia anytime soon so for now, it’s business as usual.
