Our love for grapes just got bigger.
Just when we thought we were through the last of the unicorn craze, reports have revealed there is a grape variety that tastes just like cotton candy.
And no, this isn’t a stitch-up or the result of some Frankenstein experiment. The naturally flavoured variety has been cultivated by the Grapery since 2011 and is extremely rare due to its exceptionally short season, lasting from mid-August to September. The grape which looks like regular green grapes offers the sweetness of the fairground favourite without the sticky fingers and sore teeth.
The variety was developed by horticulturist David Cain and his team at International Fruit Genetics in California who hybridised two existing species, similar to the way others have done with tangelos. With around 18 grams of sugar per 100 grams of grapes, the variety contains slightly more sugar than regular green grapes, according to NPR, but far less than other fruits such as raisins.
Back Down Under, a number of producers such as Yalumba have begun cultivating the variety with commercially-viable crops coming later this year.
