Is this the end of the dagwood dog?

The folks behind the Royal Melbourne show are stepping up their foodie game this year.

Dagwood dogs? Sure they’ll be there, and more than 35,000 will be sold, for it would not be the Royal Melbourne Show without battered sausos on sticks. But along with the fairy floss and buckets of dimmies and chips, this year’s show will also put on a feast for, ahem, slightly more discerning tastes.

“I can’t wait. It will be our first time being part of such a great event,” says master patissier Pierrick Boyer (above), who will be serving his acclaimed Le Petit Gateau treats within the Winning Tastes Pavilion. Housed inside the MasterChef set, this will no doubt be the centre of all the best things to eat.

Boyer’s brownie and passionfruit gateau – a praline, mousse and passionfruit custard cake – will be available at the Dessert Bar for the last three days of the show, where Bibelot and LuxBite will have served up their sweet treats earlier.

Three of Melbourne’s favourite restaurants will pop-up and feed the hordes. Jerry Mai will serve bowls of her Pho Nom pho (September 17-20), the Bomba crew will bring their Spanish tapas (September 21-24) while the Huxtaburger boys’ lobster roll spin-off, Mr Claws, will also be in the house (September 25-27).

Thirsty? The brew bar will have top local craft beers on tap.

“It’s malt and hops – beer is the ultimate agricultural product, which ties back to what the show is all about,” says Jayne Lewis of Two Birds. The brewery will be serving their beers, as will Hawkers and 3 Ravens, Kaiju! and Temple among others.

Boyer will also take to the masterclass stage, where he’ll demonstrate how to prepare breathtaking chocolate desserts he promises will impress at home. Adrian Li (Saigon Sally), Ian Curley (The European) and Adam D’Sylva (Tonka/Coda) are a few more boldface names who’ll share their kitchen secrets.
