It's the most liked Instagram of all time.
This rather ordinary image of an egg has just become the most liked image on Instagram, taking over from reigning Queen Kylie Jenner. It took less than ten days for this seemingly inconspicuous egg to go viral, with the picture of the breakfast favourite now boasting more than 35,500,000 likes.
The self-named @world_record_egg was created by a Londoner reports the ABC. “While doing dry January I was sitting at home reading an article online about the top 20 Instagram posts of 2018,” they commented to the news outlet. “I thought it would be an interesting experiment to try and beat the record with something as basic as possible.”
In its accompanying caption the egg addressed its key competition – social media sensation Kylie Jenner and her most liked photo of baby Stormi. It read: “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this.”
Even the creator was surprised by the egg’s immediate popularity. “It’s a comment on celebrity culture and how fragile and easily cracked it is (pun intended). But really I just thought it would be funny if something as simple as an egg could take the crown,” they commented, attributing the united efforts of many to its subsequent success. “It wasn’t me that achieved it, it was the Egg Gang.”
Jenner has proven a good sport throughout the egg-led competition, recently posting a video of herself cracking an egg on the ground. It was captioned: “Take that little egg.”
