Attention condiment fiends, ketchup caviar has just arrived.
Tomato sauce isn’t generally considered a food to fall into the posh category. The condiment is rather commonly found squeezed atop pies and soggy chips at footy matches around the nation, or piled onto slabs of steak at barbecues. But it seems that the luxe set has come calling, and tomato sauce (or ketchup as our American friends prefer) has emerged with a brand new look.
Condiment mastermind Heinz has just created ketchup Caviar. This is not the typical fish roe, but rather (as its name suggests) simply pearly beads of tomato sauce that can be piled on to your burgers and are designed to burst in your mouth. The sauce has been created in an ode to Valentine’s Day, (or ValenHeinz Day has the brand has dubbed it), as well as the 150th anniversary of the company’s founding.
How on earth is it made you may ask? Well, essentially the caviar is made from fresh tomato sauce, dripped into a container of clear liquid, (like the brine used when created traditional caviar). The ketchup creation is then squeezed out into tiny pearls for your eating pleasure.
While Ketchup Caviar is certainly innovative it is also rather elusive – the new foodie hybrid will be difficult to get your hands on, with 150 jars created. Fans wanting to sample the caviar can enter a chance to win a jar via a competition through the Heinz Facebook page. A ‘winning couple’ will also have a chance to win a jar, alongside a special ValenHeinz dinner cooked by MasterChef 2018 winner (and delicious. contributor) Sashi Cheliah.
