Uber’s ice cream delivery service is back for the fifth consecutive year, with Australia the first cab off the rank – or at least first rider in the queue.

Between 11am and 5pm this Friday, more than a million people in 400 cities worldwide will be able to order ice cream using the Uber app. Teaming up with OzHarvest, Australia’s largest food rescue charity, Uber will use the proceeds from each 500ml tub of ice cream sold to fund five meals for people in need. The target? One hundred thousand free meals.

It’s not exactly boring ice cream, either. Indeed, Uber and OzHarvest have enlisted some heavy hitters to devise their frozen line-up. George Calombaris, Matt Moran and Neil Perry have each designed an exclusive flavour inspired by rescued ingredients: Calombaris has come up with Caramel and Walnut Baklava, Moran with Banoffee Crunch, and Perry with Spiced Cookie and Salted Caramel Swirl. OzHarvest chef Travis Harvey worked with the chefs, as well as Sydney’s Serendipity Ice Cream, to create a whopping 15,000 litres of the creations for the service.

Whether Uber Ice Cream will do to Baskin Robbinsor Royal Copenhagen what Uber has done to the taxi industry remains to be seen.
