The salad favourite is proving unexpected inspiration for offspring.
Kale is everywhere these days. Not just on the menus of the brunch favouring cafés Byron way, or the salads of the health-conscious, but (rather shockingly) kale has made its way onto the top list of baby names for 2018.
Travel and Leisure recently reported that while the top ten names for girls remained in the classic category (Olivia, Sophia etc etc) the cruciferous vegetable is fast gaining ground. The name kale for girls rose 35 percent in popularity in 2018, fast proving that it really was the year’s favourite ingredient. Boys, in comparison, are finding names in the natural rather than the food realm. Ocean jumped 31 percent and Sky 38 percent.
Kale’s popularity as an ingredient has certainly helped to push its name into the limelight, says Linda Murray of parenting site BabyCentre. “Parents are inspired by the things they love as well as the sound of a name,” she says. “In the past, we’d look to the Bible or royalty for name inspiration. Today’s parents turn to other sources. We’ve had two decades plus of ‘unique’ names, and anything goes. It’s not like the days when every other baby was named Jessica, Jason, or Jennifer.”
Sure you love salad, but do you really love it enough to name your firstborn after it?
